In the old house, we had a very much student-like attic bedroom with low ceiling and mattress on the floor. Which was kind of cool, even though we were in our mid-30ies. But, having moved into our very own house and having a proper actual ensuite bedroom, even though compact in size, is the one thing that makes me feel like I’m finally an adult. Happy days!!

the bed

Our bedroom is very much a calm and paired back space. We have the most comfortable mattress we bought a few years back, and it still feels like sleeping on a cloud, I can’t recommend it highly enough. We’ve been praising it to everyone who listens, and converted a few of our friends into Easca people. It’s an Irish company and they give you a 100 days trial, which was the deciding factor for me - if somebody is confident enough to give such long trial, they must know what they are doing, right? (Just in case you’re wondering, this is not an ad. I am a huge fan of this Irish company - so much so, that we also bough a singe mattress from Easca for our 2 year old, knowing that she can grow up with it and use it for the next 15 years.)

So, we arrived in this house with the praised mattress and buying a bed was the first big step. I normally do a lot of research before the big purchases. I was thinking of getting a bed with velvet headboard at first to dive into proper luxury. This amazing pink velvet bed was one of the prettiest I had on my list, and I still love it, but The Husband opposed to sleeping in a pink bed. After lengthy discussions, we settled on Piper Bed in tarragon green from Made.com. It is AMAZING. I assembled it all by myself in about an hour or two, it was pretty easy. I absolutely love the headboard, it’s like a gigantic soft cushion, and the fabric is great quality, too. Our cat hasn’t managed to pull out any threads yet, even though she uses her claws on it every now and then. And best of all, it was one of the budget friendliest beds on my list. Win win win (any other American Office fans here? I can’t help but quote it all the time).

the chest drawers

Purely for budget reasons, I bough the Malm chest drawers from Ikea. We have 3 x 3 drawers, one is the double unit and I added a single one to that since storage is a bit of an issue in this house. Initially, I thought this was one of my temporary solutions, to be replaced with something fancier later on, but I actually really love how both chest drawers blend together so seamlessly and form a perfect size wall length nine drawer unit which is just perfect for this room, so it’s here to stay! I might upcycle it at some point to make it a little bit more interesting, but currently I’m content with its simplicity.

the bedside tables

The bedside tables are only a recent addition. Style is as important as function, of course, and it took me forever to find ones that I love, and that are both pretty and practical. These are from Jysk. The little drawer is great to hide away hand cream, hair baubles and other knickknacks, and the shelf underneath is great for storing books, baby monitor and phone overnight. I don’t like to clutter the surface of the table, I have a very strong opinion that it’s meant for flowers and pretty bits only (like this clock that I’m planning to get very soon). If not for the extra shelf underneath the drawer, all the mentioned bits and bobs would most likely end up on the floor next to the bed.

the nightlights

The nightlights are a bit of a DIY. I loved the idea of the exposed Edison bulbs, but couldn’t find a nightlight for justifiable price. I ended up assembling a set with these wall hooks from Etsy, and a cord set from Amazon. The bulbs are from Ikea, but you can get them anywhere, like these ones from Amazon.

the rug

We have a temporary rug underneath the bed from Sostrene Grene, but I’m planning to replace it with this beautiful super soft watercolor grey and green rug. We also have a sheepskin rug each side of the bed. It’s one of those rare-to-achieve mindfulness moments - putting my feet on this soft and warm thing in the morning makes me appreciate the start of a new day that bit more.

I painted one of the walls charcoal grey to add warmth, character and cosiness to this space. I have a whole philosophy of how to chose the statement wall correctly, and I’ll explain in more detail in a separate blog post soon (subscribe to my newsletter to get bi-monthly news). The grey curtains are from Ikea, and the day curtains are from Homesense.

And, of course, plants EVERYWHERE. I grew up in a house full of plants, and in my 20ies I went through a plant-dislike period where I didn’t want anything green growing anywhere near me. Thankfully though, the dislike has tuner back to can’t-live-without and I’m back to my roots, turning my home into a real life jungle, one new plant at a time. It’s amazing how much all my plants love it here. Even the North facing rooms are still really bright and in the past year most of my green babies have doubled in size. Magic!

Finally, a disclosure: there is a corner of annoyance and shame in this room. I' was never one to store lots of clothes so I don’t need a huge wardrobe, and for this reason I decided that I can assemble an open wardrobe corner. One year later, my pretty open wardrobe dream is still a cheap clothes rack and a pile of bags stacked on top of each other. To be updated, the house is going to be work in progress forever, and that’s part of the fun!
